So I will be honest. I was going to Abingdon to get some stuff off marketplace, so I googled where to do a detour with Ay, as he had already been to Thrupp lake so wanted something new.
I came across this hidden gem.
What a discovery ..the place is stunning and I am so disappointed that I did not know about it before. There is so much to do; you can so easily spend the entire day here without getting bored.
It is such a nice park and garden, set beautifully by the river, which makes for a lovely walk, but the children will probably not let you for a long time. It has something for children of all ages. The climbing fort with a spiral slide for older children is one of the best (and the safest) I have come across, with safety net all around the rope/high wobbly bridges connecting the different parts of the fort. My son (3 at the time and not the most adventurous climber at that age) felt safe enough to give it a go and loved it!! There was a separate climbing frame for younger children and another small one for toddlers in the separate baby/toddler area.
There are swings and slides for all ages and different heights/ widths, in addition to the mini forts, rockers, tunnels, bridges. Monkey bars, spider web, trampolines, multi seat horse happed swinger, climbing pyramid, lots n lots of sensory play, round about, zip wire and also one of those swinging things where the people opposite one another cling and hop to make the other go up as well (don’t know what to call it).
There are lots of picnic benches and seating areas, so it’s a great place to meet friends while the children play their hearts out. Watch us having fun in this VIDEO on instagram
After the play area, you can also bike/scootie around the edge, walk along the lock, cross the bridges, feed the ducks or just watch the boats on the lock. You must have passed Abbey Meadow and gardens as you came through. Please see our separate post down below
There’s a splash park and an outdoor heated pool too which were both closed when we visited. For more information, see the following website Abbey Meadow Outdoor Pool
