To be honest, it has been a while since I have come across an impressive playground, but Shipton under wychwood recreation ground did impress me. It is not massive by any means but there is so much to do for everyone in this up on the hill park-
We absolutely loved it. Truly an all rounder for all ages, AND with a skate park on one side, tennis courts on the other and basketball hoop and large grass fields infront!
I will try to describe it but I am sure I will miss on some details. You climb up the short hill. There is a wooden climbing structure (with logs and cargo net) in the centre, embedded in a sand pit and surrounded by Curly wooden logs, cargo net and balancing rocks and sensory play equipment. Then there is a mound with one vertical and one tunnel slide, side by side, ideal for children to race each other down. A tunnel goes underneath the mound and there are big tyres for playing on one side and another small toddler climbing frame on the other. There you will also find tractor and pig for role play.
If that is not enough, there is another climbing structure on the side with wobbly bridge, cargo net, ladders, platforms, fireman pole and wide slide, connected to another obstacle course around a tree. I just loved the entire beautiful set up, but, wait, there is also a climbing wall at the back of the frame and another climbing pole on the other side! How much better can it get
Then, there are the swings, pendulum swings, spinning bucket, spinning disc, stand up sea saw, springers , stand up spiral and zipwire.
There was something else too. Two huge disc like objects, each located on the far ends of the park, away from each other. Children were talking in one and another one was trying to listen from the other disc (like a land line suppose). I wondered if it actually worked, but Ay was too busy playing, and did not want to be bothered, so I could not find out 🙁
Verdict: I absolutely loved it and so did Ay. We combined it with a walk in the Wychwood wild garden, which was amazing too. Do the two (or even another of the smaller playgrounds in the area and make a great day out for FREE!
Address: 2 Meadow Cl, Shipton-under-Wychwood, Chipping Norton OX7 6BY
No Toilets and baby facilities that I could see
No refreshments but there was a food/coffee truck standing outside when we left (Not sure if it is there everyday)
Dogs not allowed in the play area
Picnic and sitting benches around the play area
The park is located up a small hill with steps going up, so it will not be wheelchair accessible. However, it is only a short distance and the rest of the play area is flat, so you may be able to manoeuvre children’s buggies up or just carry the babies with you
