So, before I say anything else, we saw a peacock!!! you heard it right, a peacock, not in the nature reserve but where we parked, who I suspect lives in the farm… Ah… Pure luck but what a treat to start off the day!
So how did that happen?? I was struggling to find Sydlings Copse as there is no parking and the post code I had (ox3 9ty) kept on taking us to nowhere. I must admit I returned home the first time around. Next time, we came from Elsfield and parked on the grass verge near the big gate, opposite the Royal Oak Farm, about 500m before Bayswater Road turn (on B4027). That is where the peacock was. We then walked down the bridleway until we reached the reserve. It is a fair bit of walking (~500m) but Ay hopped (and not) over the tractor tracks and we had a bit of a race on the way, so it was ok 🤣🤣
We have had our share of walks in different nature reserves and woods, a few of which are quite close to where we live, so I always think about what makes one particularly different than the other, as they are all more or less the same. I always ask myself; Do I need to drive this far or not (the cynic in me I suppose). I was a bit disappointed in this one to begin with for that very reason and more so because we couldn’t find it the first time and had to return back.
That disappointment lasted only until we spotted the treetop bird watching spots. Ay climbed the long ladder by himself (3.5 years) while my heart was in my throat as he was doing it, but he really enjoyed it. He sat there for a bit and actually spotted a kingfisher, so it was well worth the experience. He then just climbed up n down a few times. He’s growing in confidence which is brilliant to watch.
Red kites were hovering above us over and over again. We also spotted unusual bugs. Thanks to the forest school, he is very curious about these things and always looks at me to tell him what it is. I had absolutely no idea!! I need to get our little bugs book out for next time.
