We were in Carterton for something else, but when I saw Willow meadows open space on google maps , I decided to venture in this direction. It even has its own carpark off Alvescot Road, which leads to a tarmac footpath along vast green fields to the RAF perimeter footpath.
To be honest, there really isn’t much to write about. I would not recommend you taking your kids specially just for the walk unless you have dogs or you are in the area like us. There were plenty of dog walkers about and the dogs were happily socialising with each other.
As for us, we played a little bit in the stream on one side (which is mostly fenced but there were some accessible bits). The fields were really muddy and there were small patches of water dotted around as well. We constantly heard Rooster crowing and hens clucking, so we decided to walk down the footpath to see what was on the other end. We came across a couple of roosters sitting on the wall and a chicken escaping from up there, which we really enjoyed, as it was pretty boring up until them. As Ay started to moan, we decided to turn around, at which point, much to Ay’s delight, a huge RAF plane left the airbase, making a huge noise, and who then kept circling/hovering above us. That really made his day.
On our return journey to the car park, he kept running in the field, pretending to be a plane! Kids do find happiness where you least expect them to!!
