Chinnor quarry /old Kiln Lakes Circular is a 3.9k loop trail located near Chinnor that features a lake and provides an unmarked, reasonably sized nature walking area which skirts the abandoned quarry workings. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching.
⚠️ The soil is of different colour, formed from the old cement quarries and can be dangerous…
⚠️ the water is also toxic (high in alkaline content and unsuitable for swimming ) and they’re very very deep in places, not to mention, apparently there is old machinery hidden below the surface. Dye has been poured into “hazardous” water to stop people swimming in them , and you can see the water colour doesn’t look natural..
We did not complete the whole trail, and from where we were, the lake was nicely fenced off, but I have seen pictures of people in it, so it must be accessible from the other end (we parked near the residences).. just please be careful
We also came across a lovely little playground on the way down, which again was different, with large wooden sculptures, but My son wasn’t really interested in the playground today.. he just wanted to play tag and hide n seek
Fun fact: The dramatic backdrop of the abandoned quarries has been used in filming and for example, during April 2002 villagers had to get used to the sound of explosions and machine gun fire – the quarries and now demolished cement works were used to film part of the opening hovercraft sequence in the Bond movie, Die Another Day.
