We went to The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock in quest of dinosaurs. The dinosaurs did not disappoint but there is so much more to do. it’s fun, educational and best of all, its FREE!
The dinosaur gallery itself is a small room within the museum but Ay loved it and we spent around 30-45 minutes just in here. There is a range of dinosaur related activities including dinosaur puzzles, facts and quiz about dinosaurs, an electronic moving eye, colouring items and lots of books about dino. You can dress up in dinosaur costumes and play in the dinosaur puppet theatre or Listen to the sounds from 167 million years ago.
We loved feeding the dinosaurs as they roared when you fed them, followed the electronic moving eye around the room and listened to the dinosaur DVD explaining how dinosaurs were excavated from Ardley Quarry in Oxfordshire. I was amazed how carefully Ay listened to it as when we went out to the dinosaur garden, he could tell me some facts about the 168 million-year-old dinosaur footprints in the garden. Ay kept putting his feet next to the prints to compare sizes. There is a big megalosaur here in the middle of the Jurassic plants.
Each of the Museum’s ten galleries explores an aspect of the story of Oxfordshire and its people. There are amazing 3D displays in each room and every one of them had lots of interesting things for kids to do e.g. the beautiful Victorian figure with all the important dates on the side, the interactive display of the “creatures of the field and forest”, the giant sculpture of Peter Rabbit made of scrap paper, the book shelves, trying to spell your name in “runes”, Skeleton found at Abingdon buried in a lead coffin- There is something for everyone.
After the museum, you can sit in the beautiful garden and enjoy either food from the cafe or your own picnic.
