Watlington recreation playground has a good enough park but the large bright blue skating bowl with surrounding track gives it the WOW factor. There were a couple of children with their scooties riding around excitedly in it and as soon as they left, Ay started running up and down in it.
The play area itself is in the middle of the huge grass field. It is fenced with one toddler climbing frame, witches hat, springers, four way springer, stand in revolver, swings and round about.
Older kids have their own climbing frame with climbing rope, net, wall, pole, spiral metallic tunnel and slide. There is also a climbing pyramid, swings, spinning disc and zip wire with grassed mound landscaping around.
There was something called I-play which I have no clue what it was about. There were some instructions on the side but I didnt look them up (sorry!!). A lot of googling after I returned tells me the system uses both audio and visual cues not only to immerse players in the games but also to ensure equal access to children with visual or aural impairment. The games available with i.play challenge kids to lunge, twist, bend, reach, jump and run, helping them improve muscular strength and endurance, coordination, agility, stability, reaction time and cardiovascular health, thus fusings traditional physical activity with technology to create a modern approach. I-play has a dedicated website where children can enter their scores and compare them to those of their friends and other players on the i.play system league table. cool right!
The grass fields have an obstacle course and Fitness Trail, arranged in locations around the perimeter of the recreation ground, to provide a circuit route for runners and fitness training, and to promote better use of the whole recreation ground. In addition, there are targets, kick-about” football, table tennis and basket ball court.
Verdict: It is a good one with something for all ages, but I have never seen a skating bowl like this anywhere else. So, get your helmets ready and take your pump-mad/ skaters on an adventure.
