Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary is a registered charity that cares for abused and ill-treated donkeys and other animals. Located in the village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell near Wallingford, Oxfordshire, they welcome visitors between 11am and 4pm daily, except Christmas Day.
There are information boards just near the entrance at the car park with information about donkeys along with pictures and histories of some of the residents. You can then go into the Reception building to pick a map of the grounds or go to the visitors centre which has loads of information as well as souvenirs etc.
Visitors are signposted on a one way walk around the paddocks. It was lovely to watch the donkeys which are obviously well taken care off. They all look so similar, yet are so different. A few of them come up to the fence for a stroke.
You won’t spend ages here but it is a nice small detour if you are in area, all for a good cause!
Although there is no entrance fee, donations are appreciated as they rely on it for the upkeep of the donkeys. The cafe sell cakes, drinks and ice creams etc. They hold fundraisers throughout the year (e.g. they did an easter hunt which we missed but if you live close by, it should be on your to do list). You can also adopt a donkey for just £25 a year. You will receive a beautiful photograph of your donkey and details about his or her life-story as well as an adoption certificate. There are also plenty of opportunities either to visit your donkey here at the Sanctuary or when out-and-about in the local community at events or attending donkey shows. More information HERE
