South Oxford Adventure Playground (SOAP) is a local charity run by volunteers & paid sessional staff, providing free, inclusive, supervised, adventurous outdoor play and activities for children aged 7-15 (who have completed the registration form), although younger children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. They are mainly open during the holidays but also host after school and Saturday morning play sessions during term time for local children.
The playground is a gem of a place tucked away close to the city centre. It has a mega beast of a climbing frame, which is slightly rusty (and the colour is off) but quite sturdy and absolutely amazing nonetheless. There are tree houses and an obstacle course at one end and a two tiered fort on top of a hill at the other end with cargo nets, ladders, bridges, swinging rope and balancing logs connecting them all. There is another climbing frame for younger children which has a wobbly bridge, climbing rope, viewing platform and a long wavy slide. In addition, there are swings, zip-wire, stand alone slide on the hill, a den making area and plenty of trees to climb. The hill is lovely to climb/ roll up and down but I have also seen on a few pages that they get a giant slip and slide out in summers.
There is a cabin with sofas and toilets and I believe if the weather is not good, the games/play equipment is placed indoors for children to enjoy, so you can have a great time in all weathers.
There is so many other outdoor games to do too, including a giant four in a row, Frisbee, table tennis, foosball table, football and basketball.
MARK THIS ONE FOR THE HOLIDAYS. It was all A LOT OF FUN! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Hinksey park is really close, which is pretty good and has a free splash area (and chargeable outdoor heated swimming pool). You can also enjoy a walk around the Hinksey lake and up the bridge for “train spotting” to make an amazing FREE day out of it! Oxford Ice Rink is also not too far away in case you were interested in skating
