UPDATE: I HAVE JUST BEEN EMAILED BY THE PARKS TRUST THAT BBQs ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED ON WILLEN’S LAKE (1/2/2021)- HAPPY TO KNOW THEY READ MY REVIEW 😀
One of the most popular parks in Milton Keynes & you can tell by the crowds of people having BBQ on the grounds!! it is massive, so you can still have space to yourselves but some parts less socially distanced I must say
Entry is free but most activities are chargeable separately. We wanted to go boating in the pedalos-Basically swan/dragon/car Themed little boats, that you pedal to move (hired for 20£ for 40 min,max 4 people in each). It was a lot of fun. My son sat in the middle next to the steering wheel and gosh did he enjoy being the captain and changing directions. We felt safe with life jackets and the life guards with speedy boats (was told water is not too deep anyway).
The lake had loads of swans and ducks which were all ready to be fed. You can just enjoy a nice stroll or cycle around the lake, about 5k, split into 2lakes, so you can just go around one.
Next up for us was the giant Ferris wheel. It cost 6£ adult, 5£ child ,which I thought was pricey. The ride though lasted three round and you do get to spend some time at the top, so I suppose that justifies the price. However, it did get boring after a while, and my little one felt he was stuck in the Ferris wheel- perhaps they can reduce the time spent on the ride and also the the price of the ride! There are a few other mini rides and ice cream/churrios/ candy floss stalls etc, so while the overall vibe is that of a good fairground, the overall costs slowly start creeping up
There is a kids play area, which is part cordoned off at the moment due to construction but the accessible area had a decent climbing frame with slides. There is massive refurbishment going on to upgrade the playground & I saw tunnels near the area, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out
There is a splash park (which we really love doing in summers), treetop extreme as well as lots of water sports. Some of these activities need to be prebooked and charged separately, so please have a look at the website (see HERE)
I read that there is a Buddhist, peace pagoda and a lovely Japanese garden but we never got that far (that’s for another day)
Verdict- its a nice day out with lots of different things to do but my TOP tip is to set your budget before you go, as little chargeable things, will quickly add up.
